Sweet Grass County remains predominantly an agricultural county although the ongoing development of Stillwater Mining Company’s East Boulder Mine mirrors some of its early mining history. The only significant source of platinum and palladium metals in the United States is found 18,500 feet below the surface of the earth in a 28-mile long deposit of ore, called the J-M Reef, whose eastern end is on the Stillwater River near Nye, Montana, and whose western end is on the East Boulder River south of Big Timber in Sweet Grass County.
Platinum is used in manufacturing jewelry, automobile catalysts, and electrical applications in devices such as computer hard drives. The primary demand for palladium comes from the automotive industry for the manufacture of auto catalysts. Palladium is also used by the electronics and dental industries.
